Obituary for

Corrado Cigliano

of Lowell, MA

Mr. Corrado Cigliano of Nashua, NH a former 45-year resident of Lowell, MA died August 29, 2009, after a courageous battle with cancer, at his daughter’s home in West Chelmsford, MA. He was married to the late Angela (Esposito) Cigliano, who passed away in December 1975.

Corrado was born in Naples, Italy on November 1, 1927, the son of the late Joseph and Flavia (Rendina) Cigliano. He was educated in his native Italy.

As a teenager in Italy, he found himself in the midst of heavy fighting and bombardment during World War II. At 15 years of age, he, along with thousands of other ordinary citizens of Naples, staged an uprising against the occupying Nazi forces, liberating Naples on September 30, 1943, in advance of Allied forces approaching from the Salerno beachhead. This event has been recorded as the “Four Days of Naples” (Le Quattro Giornate di Napoli).

After the war, Corrado married and started a family. Seeking to escape post-war turmoil and to provide better opportunities for his family, Corrado moved his young family (Angela, his wife, with son Joseph and daughter Flavia) to the United States settling in the Highlands neighborhood in November 1955.

Corrado initially took up work in the then still viable textile industry in Lowell and eventually took a position at the Polaroid Corporation in Waltham where he worked until his retirement. After retirement, he worked seasonally at the IRS in Andover.

He was a self-taught artist who produced a prodigious number of oil and watercolor works, many of which he gave away to friends and family. He also enjoyed boating, fishing, hunting, photography, and swimming. Another great love was traveling. He visited Italy many times and embarked on numerous cross-country road trips.

He was a communicant of St. John the Evangelist Church in North Chelmsford, MA. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Anthony and Jennifer Cigliano of Lowell, MA, two daughters, Flavia Cigliano and her husband, William Killilea of West Chelmsford, Sophia and her husband, Brian Leahey of Lowell a brother Antonio Cigliano of Naples, Italy, four cherished granddaughters: Angela Killilea, Tess, Francesca and Sophia Rose Cigliano, many nieces, nephews and close friends.

He was the father of the late Joseph M. Cigliano of Los Angeles, CA, who died in June 2008, and the brother of the late Maria (Corcoran) Mangano of Tewksbury, MA, who died in May 1999.
