John F. Leary, 81,
formerly of Winthrop, died Sunday August 9, 2009 at the Lowell General
Hospital surrounded by his family.
He was married to Betty (Colson) Leary with whom he celebrated their
58th wedding anniversary on March 25.
Born in Cambridge, MA on January 3, 1928, he was the son of the late
Francis and Edna (McCarthy) Leary. John was raised in Winthrop, MA and
graduated from Winthrop High School with the class of 1945.
During the World War II, he served in the US Army in the 743rd AAA
Battalion. After the War he earned his Bachelor’s degree from Merrimack
College graduating with the Class of 1953.
A resident of Chelmsford since 1962, he worked as a Contract
Procurement Administrator at Hanscom Air Force Base for over 25 years
before retiring in 1990. He previously worked at Raytheon Corp. in
Andover.
A man of many talents, John was an accomplished photographer, auto
mechanic and woodworker, who even made golf clubs and cabinets. He
played the bagpipes and bass drum in the Stuart Highlanders. He held a
private pilot’s license. He enjoyed life and was an avid runner who
loved chocolate ice cream.
John was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church where he served as
Eucharistic Minister and Lecturer. He was a member of the Disabled
American Veterans Association.
Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons and two daughters
in-law; Frank and Carri Leary of West Bloomfield, MI, Mark Leary of
Billerica, MA and Jack and Lisa Leary of Chelmsford, MA; two daughters
and a son in-law, Janice Loughman and Jennifer and Paul Silverman all
of Chelmsford; ten grandchildren, Christine, Daniel, Meghan,Erin,
Kathryn, John III, Colson, Taylor, Nicole and Lauren; three great
grandchildren, Ryan Grace and Kelsie.

hours are Wednesday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the DOLAN FUNERAL HOME
106 MIDDLESEX ST. NORTH CHELMSFORD, MA 01863. Funeral Thursday at 8:00
a.m. from the Funeral Home with a Funeral Mass at 9:00 a.m. in St.
Mary’s Church 25 North Road Chelmsford, MA 01824. Burial in Pine Ridge
Cemetery, Chelmsford, MA. For those that wish memorials may be made in
