Obituary for

Linda J. Fall

Retired Teacher, Volunteer, and Activist

Mrs. Linda Jean (Sandberg) Fall of Chelmsford, formerly of Billerica, MA passed away on Sunday January 24 after a long illness at the age of 60 at the Merrimack Valley Hospice in Haverhill, MA.

She was the wife of Thomas Fall for 33 years as of April 16, 2010.

Born in Lowell, MA on April 11, 1949, the daughter of the late Chester and Edith (Lamond) Sandberg. She was raised in Billerica and graduated from Billerica Memorial High School with the Class of 1967. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Fitchburg State Teachers College with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Secondary Education and Suma Cum Laude in her History Minor. She was awarded full membership in the Logos Honor Society recognizing scholarship in the Field of History.

Linda worked as an Elementary School Teacher at the Parker Elementary School and the Pollard Elementary School in Billerica from 1972 until 1982. Upon being compelled to retire from teaching due to her deteriorating health, she completed her Certification in Paralegal Studies at Middlesex Community College, graduating with Highest Honors and conferred full membership into Phi Theta Kappa. Just prior to her Heart Transplant in May of 1992, she was one of 20 recipients chosen worldwide to be awarded the First Joslin Diabetes Center Distinguished Achievement Award.

Following her Heart Transplant she and her husband volunteered as speakers for The New England Organ Bank and Trio (Transplant Interplant International Organization). She most enjoyed returning to the classroom to share her personal story as a transplant Recipient with students at various middle schools and high schools. This brought her back to her roots and her innate love for children. She also spoke at a Press Conference held at the State House relating her story in support of a bill to promote Organ Donation.

To her the Donor Families were always the true Heroes in the story of Transplantation.
She and her husband became passionate and ardent lobbyists for Health Care Reform and universal and affordable Prescription Drug Coverage for Senior and Disabled Citizens speaking with many of our State Legislators and testifying before the Joint Committee on Health Care at the State House. Along with her husband, she became two of the primary catalyst in the establishing of the former Pharmacy Program Plus, a plan for catastrophic pharmaceutical coverage for Senior and Disabled Citizens, which has been followed by the current Pharmacy Advantage Program.

She was an active member of the community and worked as a Town Meeting Representative in Billerica & Chelmsford for many years. She formerly served as an Associate Member of the Chelmsford Commission on Disabilities.
Linda was a member of the Central Baptist Church in Chelmsford and member of the church's Deaconate. In her early years she was a member of the Rainbow Girls.

Besides her husband, she is survived by her brother and his wife, Bruce and Gertrude Sandberg of Billerica; a sister-in-law Nancy Nickerson and her husband Robert of Billerica; a sister in-law, Janet Murray and her husband Therrell of Baton Rouge, LA; her aunt and uncle, Constance and James Lamond of Somers, CT; several cousins, 6 nieces and nephews; 9 grand nieces and nephews.
