Mr. Howard Francis “Tiny” Given,
Sr. of Tyngsborough, MA died Tuesday evening, January 5, 2010
surrounded by his loving family at his home in Tyngsborough.
He was happily married to Mrs. Beverly D. (Hopkins) Given with whom he
had celebrated their 32nd wedding anniversary on December 31,
2009.
Born in Buffalo, New York on August 30, 1930, the son of the late
Howard R. and Helen C. (Leslie) Given. He was a graduate of
the Lowell Vocational Technical High School with the class of 1948; he
also attended Rivier College in Nashua, NH.
Mr. Given served with the Massachusetts U.S. Army National Guard for 25
years. He credited his Military service for his ability to make great
meals for very large groups. Any one who has eaten Tiny’s
corned beef can attest to this.
For 34 years he proudly served the Town of Tyngsborough as a police
officer and retired at the rank of Senior Sergeant in 1995.
He also served as Tyngsborough’s director of Civil Defense for many
years. “Retirement” for Tiny allowed him to devote more time to his gun
and ammunition business “Frank and Tiny” where custom ammunition was
accompanied by lots of good conversation.
He was a faithful member of the Hudson Congregational Church in Hudson,
NH.
He was a life member of the Tyngsborough Sportsmen’s Club, a member of
the Harvard Sportsmen’s Club in Harvard, MA, a member of the
Tyngsborough-Dunstable Lions, and a Golden Eagles member of the
National Rifle Association. He was a passionate New England Patriots
fan and avid hunter but was most happy spending quality time with his
family and friends.
Besides his devoted wife, Beverly, he is survived by two sons and a
daughter-in-law, Howard F. Given, II of Bradford, MA, Christopher J.
and Ryse D. Given of Haverhill, MA, five daughters, Brenda J. Shrigley
of Exeter, NH, Susanne C. Given of Tampa, FL and Ossipee, NH, Helen S.
Given of Haverhill, MA, Julie L. Carkin, MD of Seattle, WA, and Kelly
L. Munro of Claremont, NH, eight grandchildren, James P. Shrigley, III,
Billy R. Hawkins, Jr., Michael Hawkins, Samantha L. Hawkins, Harold E.
Walton IV, Daniel H. Walton, Casey Anne Given, and Annmarie Sprague of
Nashua, NH, and two great-grandchildren, Billy R. Hawkins, III, and
Charris A. Hawkins. “Tiny” is also survived by his former
