Obituary for

Francis Anthony Loya

of N. Chelmsford, MA

 
Mr. Francis Anthony Loya of N. Chelmsford, MA died Saturday January 9, 2010, at the Pine Knoll Nursing Home in Lexington, MA after a long illness.

He was happily married for 38 years to Mrs. Judith Fay (Starkey) Loya.

Born in Lyndora, PA on October 5, 1928, the son of the late Very Reverend Stephen and Margaret (Boksay) Loya.  He was a graduate of Duquesne High School in Duquesne, PA with the class of 1946, and received his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Carnegie Technical Institute with the class of 1954.

He served with the U.S. Navy Air Corps during WWII.

Francis retired in 1992 after an 18-year career with Digital Equip. Corp.  He represented Digital on the Computer Business Equipment Manufactures Assoc. Power Committee (CBEMA/ESC-3) from 1976 to 1992.  He was one of two US delegates representing the US computer industry in revising IEC publications on harmonics and voltage variations.

Francis wrote two articles, “AC Power Harmonics for EC 1992” and “An Overview: Effects of Non-Linear Currents in Three Phase AC Power Distribution Systems” for the Digital Power System Journal.  He co-authored with Harish Chandra “Monitoring of a Computer Installation for Power Harmonics”.

He was a communicant of St. John the Evangelist Church of N. Chelmsford, MA.
In his earlier years, Francis was an active Boy Scout adult volunteer who served in various positions on the troop, district and council levels in Anne Arundel County, MD, and was a member of the Order of the Arrow.  He was a private pilot for many years.

Besides his loving wife, Judith, he is survived by three sons and their wives, Thomas A. and Sophia (Taylor) Loya of Nottingham, England, Daniel T. and Lea (Cabasco) Loya of Seattle, WA, John M. and Jessica (Drinkwater) Loya of Leominster, MA, four daughters and their husbands, Lisa and Scott Durant of China, ME, Theresa and Matthew Richards of Shirley, MA, Veronica Gomez of Winchendon, MA, Angela and Jamie McMaster of N. Chelmsford, MA, 13 brothers and sisters and their spouses, Stephen, Andrew, and M. Timothy all of Dawson, PA, Mary Najeski of Pittsburgh, PA, Paul and Dorothy of Dawson, PA, Helen and John Hvasta and Eugene and Nicolette all of St. Augustine, FL, Anna Jane and Tom Petty of Trenton, NJ, Theodore of Springlake, NJ, Rev. Daniel of Pleasant City, OH, Kathleen Biernacki of Toledo, OH, Joseph and Joanne of Basking Ridge, NJ, and Lawrence and Bernadette of Brandon, FL, sister-in-law, Jacquelyn and John Cheshire of Greensboro, NC, a former son-in-law, Tyrone Gomez of Winchendon, MA, and a brother-in-law, David and his wife Kathleen Starkey of Sagamore Hills, OH, 21 grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews and several close family friends including Pamela Tardiff.

He was the father of the late Robert S. Loya of Lancaster, MA who died December 7, 1995, the brother of the late Rev. John Michael Loya and the brother-in-law of the late Anna Mary Loya.

CHELMSFORD, with a funeral Mass at 9AM at St. John the Evangelist Church in N. Chelmsford. Burial in St. John Cemetery, Lancaster, MA.
