Obituary for

Joseph E. Sweeney 

Retired Pharmacist; 71

 
Lowell – Joseph Sweeney, a life-long resident of Lowell died July 15, 2009 at Palm Manor Nursing Home in Chelmsford, MA surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with cancer.  He was the husband of Sheila (Crane)Sweeney with whom he shared 47 years of marriage.

Joe was born in Lowell on November 24, 1937, the son of the late Eugene J. Sweeney and Florence (McLean) Sweeney.  He graduated from the Sacred Heart Grammar School and Lowell High School.  He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Massachusetts College of Pharmacy in 1960.

His first job as a pharmacist was at O’Brien’s Drugstore on Central Street, which later became Sweeney’s Drugs.  Later, Joe and his late cousin, Francis R. Sweeney merged their pharmacies to become McCord Sweeney Drugs on Dummer Street.  Joe completed his career at the VA Hospital in Bedford, MA as a CMOP Pharmacist, from which he retired in 2007.

He was a communicant at Saint Margaret Church in Lowell, where he served as a Senior Altar Server.  In addition to spending time with his two grandsons, he loved music, sports, the ocean and sunrises.

Joe was a former member of the Lowell Rotary Club and a member of the Greater Lowell Pharmaceutical Association.

Besides his wife Sheila, Joe is survived by two sons, Joseph E. Sweeney of Lowell and Timothy M. Sweeney of Boston; a daughter Kathleen M. Sweeney of Chelmsford; and 2 grandsons, Connor P. Murphy and Reilly P. Murphy, also of Chelmsford, and a brother-in-law, Edward Crane of Revere.  He is also survived by many Sweeney cousins.

SWEENEY, JOSEPH E. of LOWELL, MA died July 15, 2009. Visiting hours Sunday 4 to 8 p.m. Funeral Monday at 8:30AM from the DOLAN FUNERAL HOME 106 MIDDLESEX ST. CHELMSFORD, with a funeral Mass at 9:30AM at St. Margaret’s Church in Lowell. Burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Tewksbury. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Joe’s name to either the Saint Margaret Parish Renovation Fund, 374 Stevens Street, Lowell, MA 01851 or to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, 10 Brookline Place West, 6th Floor, Brookline, MA  02445.
