Obituary for

John L. Cryts

of Chelmsford, MA

John L. Cryts, 76, of Chelmsford died Saturday June 13, 2009 at home surrounded by his family after a long battle with cancer.

He was the husband of Louise M. (Rigazio) Cryts with whom he would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on July 11.    

Born to a military family in Quantico, VA on May 12, 1933, he was the son of the late Bennie and Margaret (Conron) Cryts. In his early years, he lived in many places including Paris Island and Cuba. In the ninth grade the family moved to Reading, Ma. where John graduated from Reading High School with the class of 1951.

A decorated veteran of the Korean War, John served in the US Air Force earning the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Good Conduct Award and the Army Occupation Medal.

After the war, he attended the University of Mass. at Amherst and graduated from Lowell Technical College in 1973 with a B.S. Degree in Electrical Engineering.

A resident of Chelmsford for over 45 years, John worked as an electrical engineer with Raytheon Corp. in Bedford, MA for 20 years and in Tewksbury for 5 years before retiring in 1992. John was active in his children’s lives and spent many years coaching little league and youth basketball. He also enjoyed several years as an Alpine Square Dance member. He loved traveling and spent the last 15 years with Louise visiting family and friends across the US and Mexico in their RV.

He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Chelmsford.

He is survived by Louise, his loving, caring wife and best friend of 50 years; two daughters, Diane Patriarca and her husband Michael of Lake Zurich, Ill and Teresa Carne and her friend Tedd Jounakos of Windham, NH; a son, Robert Cryts and his fiancé Sheila Scheick of Andover, MA; four brothers, William Cryts of Palm City, Fl, Robert Cryts of Quincy, MA, Charles and his wife, Noel Cryts of Brighton, MA and Paul Cryts of Pelham, NH; a sister, Charlotte and her husband Donald Faehn of The Villages, FL; a brother in-law, Floyd Blair of Montana; five grandchildren, Jacob, Katie, John, Sammi and Libby; many nieces and nephews.

John was predeceased by two sisters, Helen Hearns of CA and Arlene Blair of Montana.
