Mr. Robert Paul Phaneuf of Salem,
MA, formerly of Chelmsford, died Tuesday evening, March 9, 2010 at Beth
Israel Deaconess Hospital in Boston, MA.
He was married to the late Mrs. Patricia (O’Loughlin) Phaneuf with whom
he enjoyed more than 50 years of marriage. Mrs. Phaneuf died December
23, 2006.
Born in Lowell, MA on December 2, 1925, the son of the late Elphege and
Amella (Giroux) Phaneuf. He was raised in Lowell and attended
St. Jean d’Arc School. As a young man, he enjoyed his participation in
the 4H organization. Later he attended Dracut High School. He graduated
from the University of Massachusetts with a Bachelors Degree in
Chemistry.
He served with the U.S. Navy aboard the destroyer USS MacDonough during
WWII in the Pacific theater and was honorably discharged in May of
1946.
He was employed in his earlier years as a Chemist with the Coca Cola
Corporation in the Quality Control Division and more recently as the
owner and operator of Phaneuf Press of Lowell, Billerica and Boston.
He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church of Chelmsford, MA.
Mr. Phaneuf was a member of Friendship Sloop Society. He enjoyed golf
and woodworking, summertime at Goose Rocks Beach, Maine, and spending
quality time with family especially his six grandchildren. His greatest
passion was sailing the coast of Maine in his Friendship Sloop
“Surprise”.
He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Robert P. Phaneuf, Jr. and
his wife, Kathleen (Pender) Phaneuf of Lowell, MA, two daughters and
their husbands, Julie Phaneuf and Jay Kiely of Swampscott, MA, Anne
Marie Phaneuf and David MacKay of Nantucket, MA, a brother, Norman
Phaneuf of Dracut, MA, six cherished grandchildren, Mary Kathleen
Phaneuf, Matthew Robert Phaneuf, Claire Brigid MacKay, Luke Joseph
MacKay, Olivia Amela Kiely and John Paul Kiely, two dear
sisters-in-law, Eileen O’Loughlin and Rita Broderick and her husband
John Broderick, and several close family friends.
He was the brother of the late Richard Phaneuf of New York City, NY,
and Raymond Phaneuf of Lowell, MA.
FUNERAL NOTICE
Phaneuf, Robert P. Phaneuf of Salem, MA died March 9, 2010. Visiting
hours Friday 4 to 7 p.m. Funeral Saturday at 8 a.m. from the DOLAN
FUNERAL HOME 106 MIDDLESEX ST. CHELMSFORD, with a funeral Mass at 9
a.m. at St. Mary’s Church in Chelmsford. Burial in Pine Ridge Cemetery,
Chelmsford. Memorials may be made in his name to the New England
Shelter for Homeless Veterans, 17 Court Street, Boston, MA, and The
