Richard A. "Dick" Tavares

Richard A. “Dick” Tavares, 70, a resident of N. Chelmsford, died Tuesday March 9, 2010 at Lowell General Hospital.

Dick was the 39 year longtime companion of Harriett “Sam” Carroll. He was born in Lowell on October 25, 1939, a son of the late Afons Mello Tavares and the late Mary (Rupa) Tavares.

Dick was educated in the Lowell school system, graduating from Lowell High School in 1958. He was Treasurer of his sophomore class at Lowell High School. He was a member of the Lowell High baseball and football teams. In 1958, his senior year at Lowell High, he won the best defensive player award in the Lowell-Lawrence football game. In his younger years he played first base for the original little league Yankee baseball team in Lowell.

After serving with the United States Navy on the carrier USS Valley Forge during the Vietnam conflict and after being honorably discharged in 1962, Dick was employed by the US Postal Service at the Tewksbury branch. He retired from the Postal Service in 1995 after 30 years.

Dick was a former member of the Nabnasset country club in Westford where he enjoyed golfing. He was a present member of the Fletcher Club in Westford and member of the American Legion #313 of N. Chelmsford.
In addition to his companion Harriott “Sam” Carroll, he is survived by one brother, James A. Tavares Sr. and his wife Janice M. Tavares of Lowell; a sister, Marilyn D. Tavares of Oakland, CA; two sisters in-law, Isabel M. Tavares of Lowell and Rosemarie Tavares of Lowell. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.

Dick was predeceased by his brothers, Afons M. Tavares Jr. in 1997,Joseph J. Tavares June 22, 2007 and John F. Tavares who passed away on Nov. 19, 2009.

TAVARES, Richard “Dick” Tavares of N. Chelmsford, MA died March 9, 2010. You are invited to his calling hours Sunday 4 to 7 p.m. on March 14 at the Dolan Funeral Home 106 Middlesex St. N. Chelmsford, MA. His Funeral Monday begins at 8:00 a.m. from the Funeral Home with a 9:00 a.m. Mass at St. John the Evangelist Church N. Chelmsford.
