Obituary for

Ralph J. Heck

WWII Navy Vet of Lowell

Mr. Ralph Jack Heck, 82 of Lowell, MA died Saturday morning, May 23, 2009 at Lowell General Hospital after a short illness.

He was married to his beloved wife, the late Mrs. Lucy M. (Menezes) Heck who died September 25, 2001.  The first day Ralph met Lucy at the Charlestown Navy Yard, he told her that he would marry her.    

Ralph was born in Edinburg, IN on August 10, 1926, the son of the late G. Bryan and Veva (Arbuckle) Heck, and attended schools in Indiana.

At the age of 18, he served with the U.S. Navy during WWII in the Pacific Theatre as a Carpenter’s Mate Third Class.  On board the USS Frament (DE-677/APD-77), Ralph sailed half-way around the world before turning the age of 20.

He was a longtime employee with of National Casket Co. in Cambridge, MA and of G.V. Moore Lumber Co. in Chelmsford and Ayer, MA.

Ralph served as Commander of the Billerica DAV, and was a member of the Lowell Senior Citizen Club, and Lowell Senior Center.  Ralph had a talent for being able to fix anything and grew the best tomatoes anywhere.  He will be remembered as a good friend, a wonderful father, grandfather, and a gentleman.

He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Margaret “Peg” Sullivan and Michael Lydon of Concord, MA, and Elaine Mills and Jim DeFelice of Pepperell, MA, a son and daughter-in-law, Bryan W. and Jan Heck of Shelbyville, IN, two sisters, Carolyn and her husband, Dr. Henry Scheidt, and Maxine Schlichter, and a brother, Bill and his wife Pearl Heck.  Ralph is also survived by 6 grandchildren, Kerry Sullivan, Bonnie and her husband Marco Barbosa, Jennifer and her husband Mike Mandelenakis, Rebecca and her husband Dan Babine, Levi and his wife Victoria Heck and Kelsey Heck, 7 great grandchildren, AJ Guimbard, Matteo and Davio Barbosa, Ava Mandelenakis, Kate and Grace Babine, and Jessey Heck, as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Tom and Dick Heck.

FUNERAL NOTICE

HECK, Mr. Ralph Jack Heck, 82 of Lowell, MA died May 23, 2009. Visiting hours Wed. 4 to 8 p.m. Funeral Service will be Thurs. at 11AM at the DOLAN FUNERAL HOME 106 MIDDLESEX ST. CHELMSFORD. Burial in Westlawn II Cemetery, Lowell.
