Obituary for

Robert V. Miller

of Chelmsford formerly of Billerica and Medford, MA

 
Mr. Robert Vincent “Bob” Miller a 15-year resident of Chelmsford, formerly of Billerica and Medford, MA, died peacefully surrounded by his loving family Thursday, November 5, 2009 at Lahey Clinic Medical Center in Burlington, MA.

He was the loving companion to Shirley St. Amand. 
  
Born in Medford, MA on April 7, 1929, the son of the late John J. and Helen L. (Buckley) Miller.  He was a graduate of Malden Catholic High School with the class of 1947 and attended Boston College.

He was employed as a salesman in the paper industry but was most happy being around the game of hockey.  Bob’s love of the game began when he played hockey while at Malden Catholic.  That sparked a life-long commitment to the game of hockey.  Bob was one of the founders of the Billerica Youth Hockey Association.  He and other members of the community built the first outdoor hockey rink near Lampson Field in Billerica in 1960.  He was the first head coach for the Billerica Memorial High School hockey team and was a referee at the high school and college levels.  In addition to owning and operating Varsity Sports in Billerica he established and operated youth hockey leagues that have benefited local hockey players for over 40 years.  Bob was a giving man who contributed endlessly to many charitable organizations.

He was an active and faithful communicant of St. Mary’s Church and St. John the Evangelist Church both in Chelmsford.

Besides his loving companion, Shirley, he is survived by two sons, Robert M. Miller a former Boston Bruin and US Olympian and his companion Allison Rathbun both of Coventry, RI, Paul E. Miller and his wife, Katherine both of Billerica, two daughters, Maureen A. Miller and her companion, Thomas Hoyle both of Boston, Mary Ellen and her husband, William Crosby of Middleton, a sister and her husband, Helen and Joseph Reardon of Stoneham, close family friends, Richard and Janice St. Amand of Bristol, NH, Mark St. Amand of Chelmsford, Melissa and Steve Pynn of Chelmsford, nine cherished grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and dear friends.

Bob was predeceased by his brothers, Jack J. Miller of Chelmsford, and Thomas F. Miller who died in WWII.

Visiting hours Monday, 3 to 7 p.m. Funeral Tuesday at 8AM from the DOLAN FUNERAL HOME 106 MIDDLESEX ST. CHELMSFORD, with a funeral Mass at 9AM at St. John the Evangelist Church in N. Chelmsford.
