Willis J. Spiller, 76, of
N. Chelmsford died unexpectedly Saturday November 14, 2009 at the
Lowell General Hospital in Lowell, MA.
He was married to Gertrude (Klufts) Spiller with whom he celebrated
their 53rd wedding anniversary on Feb. 18th.
Born in Lowell, MA on August 14, 1933, he was the son of the late
Carroll and Elizabeth (Holt) Spiller. He was raised in Lowell and
graduated from Lowell High School with the Class of 1951.
A veteran of the Korean War era, he served in the US Army with the 11th
Division Airborne.
Mr. Spiller worked as a Correctional Officer for the State of
Massachusetts at MCI Concord for 32 years before retiring in July of
1989.
A resident of North Chelmsford since 1961, he attended the
Congregational Church of North Chelmsford.
He received a medal from the The Humane Society of the Commonwealth of
Massachusetts for his courage in the rescue of a young girl on the icy
Merrimack on February 12, 1950. He was a member of the American Legion
Post 313 in N. Chelmsford and regular attendee of the Veterans’
breakfast at the Senior Center. He was an avid football fan
that held season tickets to the Patriots for over 20 years.
He was very active in the football programs at Nashoba Valley Technical
High School and Acton-Boxboro High School.
Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons and their wives, William
J. and Michelle (Levasseur) Spiller of Dracut, MA, Lawrence A. and Lisa
(Kasilowski) Spiller of Spring Hill, FL, James P. and Suzanne (Hawkins)
Spiller of N. Chelmsford, MA; a brother, Robert Spiller of Windsor, MA;
a sister, Sue Gongloff of Newport Richie, FL; seven grandchildren, John
M. Spiller, William J. Spiller Jr, Larissa A. Spiller, Hope J. St.
Gelais, Andrew A. Spiller, Jacklyn E. Spiller and Nicholas C.
Spiller; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his two daughters, Judith Ann Spiller of
Dracut who died Feb. 14, 1993 and Janet Elizabeth St. Gelais of
Westford who died Dec. 18, 1999 and her husband Kenneth St. Gelais of
Westford who died in May of 2002.

Chelmsford, MA. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery,
