Obituary for

Ann L. (Matthews) Caruso

of Chelmsford, MA

Ann Letitia (Mathews) Caruso, 91, of Chelmsford, MA formerly of Lynn, MA died Friday, October 23, 2009 at the Lowell General Hospital after a long period of failing health.

She was married to the late Joseph A. Caruso who died in 1988.

Ann was born on Oct. 3, 1918 in a tent on the grounds of the Gloucester Hospital in Gloucester, MA during the catastrophic flu epidemic of 1918.

She was the daughter of the late Nelson H. and Clara (Burns) Mathews.  She was educated in the Lynn Public School System.

Ann worked for countless years with the Sister of the Poor in Lynn, MA assisting the poor and disadvantaged in Lynn.

She was a devote Catholic and longtime communicant of St. Joseph's Church in Lynn and also at St. Mary's Church in Chelmsford.

She spent much of her life advocating and caring for her handicapped son, Michael.  Her greatest joy was spending time with her family, and she shared her love of life with them.  Her inner strength, sense of humor and compassion for others made her a wonderful role model for everyone.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy A. and Thomas M. Mullen of Chelmsford, MA, a son, David Caruso of New York, and a brother, David Mathews of Merrimac, MA.  Ann is also survived by nine grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews as well as several close friends.

She was the mother of the late Michael S. Caruso of Lynn who died in 1997, and the late Joseph N. Caruso of Brunswick, ME who died in 1999. Ann was the sister of the late Helena Sheffer of Morganfield, KY who died earlier this year and the late Frederick Mathews of Nokomis, FL, who died in 2008.
