Obituary for

Raymond Alexander Ross

of Westford

 
R. Alexander Ross of Westford, MA died Thursday, October 6, 2009 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was a beloved brother, husband, father and friend.

He was well loved by his wife Mary Eileen (Wetzen) Ross with whom he celebrated their 44th wedding anniversary on October 2nd.

He was born in Zanesville, Ohio on October 11, 1933 the son of William McDonald, of Banff, Scotland and Mary Irene (Moran) Ross, of Pennsylvania.

Alex earned a Bachelors of Science, a Masters of Science and a Ph.D, all in Electrical Engineering, the field in which he enjoyed a successful career.  He published more than 40 papers and reports, making important technical contributions to the area of radar technology.  He led research and development teams at Cornell Aeronautical Laboratory and MIT Lincoln Laboratory resulting in significant improvements to critical strategic countermeasures for our national defense.

He was a resident of Westford for more than 30 years and a communicant of St. Catherine's Church.  Alex was an active athlete in his youth.  He loved books and music and enjoyed painting and wood carving.  He always had a dog by his side.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his brother, William Ross of Sidney, British Columbia, and three sisters, Anne Ross and Margaret Wilson of Buffalo, New York, and Elizabeth O'Connor of Chicago, Illinois; his two sons, William and his wife Jennifer (Boucher) Ross of Westford; Alexander and his wife Julie (Applegarth) Ross of Portsmouth, New Hampshire; his daughter, Martha Connors and her husband Philip Connors of Silver City, New Mexico; and two grandsons, Michael and Alex Ross of Westford.
