Miss Rita Eleanor
McGowan, 94, of N. Chelmsford died Sunday morning, September 13, 2009
at Palm Manor Nursing Home in Chelmsford.
Born in Lowell, on May 19, 1915, the daughter of the late Hugh and Mary
T. (Cashman) McGowan. She was a graduate of Keith Hall with
the class of 1933, St. Elizabeth’s Hospital School of Nursing in 1938,
and Boston University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing Education in
1950 and also a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing Administration and Nursing
Education in 1953.
She worked as the Assistant Chief of Nursing Services at the Edith
Norris Veterans Hospital in Bedford from 1939 until her retirement in
1975, during which she spent several years as the Assistant Chief of
Nursing Services.
Rita was a faithful and active communicant of St. John the Evangelist
Church of N. Chelmsford, and former communicant of St. Michael’s Church
in Lowell, where she belonged to the Blessed Sodality.
Rita was a member of St. Elizabeth School of Nursing and Boston
University alumni association. She was active in Chelmsford Senior
Citizens and the League of Catholic Women.
She is survived by several her nieces including, Leslie Joyce McGowan
of Meredith, NH, and her many grand-nieces and nephews among them,
Philip T. and Belinda McGowan, Jr. of Dublin, Ireland, Brian J. and
Jenny McGowan of Nashua, NH, Lisa (McGowan) Kasparian and her husband,
David of Boston, as well as numerous several great-grand nieces and
nephews.
She was the aunt of the late Philip T. McGowan of Meredith, NH who died
in April of 2008.

Visiting hours Thurs. 3 to 7 p.m. Funeral Fri. at 8 a.m. from the DOLAN
FUNERAL HOME 106 MIDDLESEX ST. CHELMSFORD, with a funeral Mass at 9
a.m. at St. John’s Church, N. Chelmsford. Burial in St. Patrick’s
Cemetery, Lowell. In lieu of flowers, Memorial donations may be made
in Rita’s memory to the St. John the Evangelist Church Building Fund
