Brian L. McDonough, 73, a resident of Lowell, Falmouth, MA, and Marco Island, FL died Friday, May 12th at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Carole (Fadden) McDonough. Born in Lowell, November 18, 1943, Brian was the son of the late George and the late Gertrude (Eastham) McDonough, and the stepson of the late Catherine (Callahan) McDonough. He attended Lowell elementary schools and was a 1961 graduate of Lowell High School, a 1965 graduate of the University of Lowell with a B.A. in English, and a 1967 graduate of the University of Iowa with an M.A. in English. Soon after graduation he began teaching English at Lowell High School where he would remain until retiring as department head in 2005.

Brian enjoyed reading, cooking, drinking Manhattans, watching British television with his perfectly matched wife, and listening to and playing piano music. A long time piano student of Jack Payne, he entertained our home with live performances almost every night. Mostly, he enjoyed the company of friends and spending time with his family (perhaps most especially his grandchildren Morgan and Ryan). Smart and witty, he was a good person–kind and considerate to everyone he met, and we will all miss him very much.

Besides his wife he is survived by his sons, Geoffrey McDonough and his wife, Susan Silk of Lowell, and Gregory McDonough and his wife, Robyn of Lowell; grandchildren, Morgan and Ryan McDonough; brothers, Kevin and his wife, Susan Martin-McDonough of Pelham, NH, and Gary McDonough of Glen Rock, NJ; sister, Susan McDonough and her husband, Carl Rosenfield of Waltham; in-laws Martha and George Cunha of Chelmsford; Eileen and John Griener of Mashpee, MA; and Sandra and Gerald Flynn of Chelmsford; and many nieces and nephews. He is pre-deceased by his beloved sister-in-law Catherine McDonough of Glen Rock, NJ.

Visiting hours Wednesday, 3 to 7 P.M. Funeral Thursday at 10am at the DOLAN FUNERAL HOME 106 MIDDLESEX ST. CHELMSFORD. Burial in St. Patrick Cemetery, Lowell. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in his name to the Lowell High School Scholarship Fund 50 Fr. Morrissette Blvd., Lowell MA 01852 ARRANGEMENTS BY DOLAN FUNERAL HOME 978-251-4041.

Mrs. McDonough, Greg, Robyn, Geoff, and the entire McDonough family:

We are so sorry for your loss. Our thoughts, prayers, and deepest sympathies are with you. The best way to memorialize is to remember that person the way they lived, and despite only having met your father, Greg and Geoff, a couple times, it’s clear the positive imprint he had on you.

    With Sympathy,
    Jay and Patty Lucey

Dear Carole, and all the McDonough Family,

Heartful sorrow to you, your sons, and the entire family! The Greater Lowell Community has lost a great man this week. I personally am grateful for the kindness you gave to me when I was a teenager, those summers… I played cards at your kitchen table at “the beach”, and you two showed me (Susan was there too) what a young family, full of life looked like, and how it influenced others. Thank you- to you and Brian for your “exceptional influence”! I shoulda spent more time with you folks! Most grateful, Bless you,…Leslie Greene Kittenbrink

Please accept my condolences. I have fond memories of Mr McDonough as faculty advisor to the student newspaper and yearbook in the 1970s.

Carol, my condolences to you and your family. Brian was a great guy and Joanne and I always looked forward to visiting with you and Brian on Marco and eating together at beautiful places in Florida. I know Joanne had special memories of working with Brian at Lowell HS and we both had special memories of socializing with Brian and you. The world was a better place when Brian was with us. He will be missed by many people.
