Church of the Nazarene in Lowell
Marguerite “Peggy” (Barnard) Alley, 94, of Dracut, MA left her earthly home and made her way to heaven on Wednesday, January 23, 2019, at Lowell General Hospital. She was married to the late Oscar W. Alley, Jr., who passed away in 2012 after 64 years of marriage.
Born in Lowell, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Margaret (Riley) Barnard and attended Cambridge public schools as a child. Peggy and her husband raised their children in Somerville where she had many friends.
She retired from her position at Tufts University in 1986. Peggy was a long time member of the Cambridge Church of the Nazarene where she served faithfully in many capacities. One of her greatest joys was sharing flannel graph bible stories with the children during Jr. Church. After moving to Tewksbury then Dracut, Peggy became a devoted member of the Lowell First Church of the Nazarene where she enjoyed singing in the choir and being involved in the Mary Martha Society. She loved her family and took pleasure in watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren play and grow.
She is survived by her daughter Carol Linton of Pelham, NH and her son Charles Alley and wife Judith of Milford, MA; her grandchildren Kristi and her husband Christopher Knepp of Dracut, Timothy Linton of Braintree, Joshua and his wife Alysha Alley of Auburn, Michael Alley of Milford, and Matthew Alley of Milford; her great –grandchildren Kelsey Knepp, Ashley Knepp, Sydney Knepp, Cylex Knepp and Joshua “JJ” Alley Jr.; as well as several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Fern Burgess, Norma Anderson, and the mother-in -law of the late Robert Linton.
Visiting hours Monday 4 to 8 P.M at Dolan Funeral Home 106 Middlesex St. N. Chelmsford, MA. Funeral Tuesday at 11:00 at Lowell First Church of the Nazarene 1195 Varnum Ave. Lowell, MA. Burial in the Oakland Cemetery, Dracut, at a later date. Memorials may be made in her name to the Mary Martha Society at Lowell First Church of the Nazarene. I have so many wonderful memories of Peggy and the Alley family. I knew all of them at the Cambridge Church of the Nazarene. When Peggy and Oscar sang it was just beautiful. Jr. Church was just perfect for Peggy who was great with the kids. My condolences to the family but they know that Peggy is in Heaven.

We will always remember Peggy as a wonderful role model, children’s church leader, and kind, loving friend to our family. We have such fond memories of her teaching flannel graph stories in the Cambridge church when we were small, which had a lasting impact on our faith and love for Jesus. She was a dear friend to our parents as well, and we spent many happy times at her home. She will be missed by all who knew her, especially her family, who she loved so very much. We are praying for you all and hope that you are comforted by knowing you will see her again one day in heaven.

From the time when I was 10 years old to my mid-20s, Peggy Alley importantly — and wonderfully — influenced my life. To me, Peggy was always a continually supportive person, always providing wonderful encouragement. When she was a leader of Junior Church at the Cambridge Church of the Nazarene, she was an encouragement to me in my submitting my life to the Lord’s call. When I became too old for Junior Church, she encouraged me to stay and play the piano for all of the singing during Junior Church. She also encouraged me to play the piano for the church choir cantata every year at Christmas and also at Easter. She also inspired me to form a children’s choir, which I directed and played piano for. In my continuing years as an adult and after I moved away to Virginia, Peggy — whenever I saw her — ALWAYS continued to inquire about, and to encourage me in, all of my piano and other musical ventures. In short, when I think of Peggy’s influence on my life, I think of two words: supportive and encouraging. I very much look forward to seeing Peggy again in Heaven. Until then, I will miss her greatly.
