Deborah Marie Harlan, 85, a longtime resident of Greenland, NH, passed away Saturday, January 7, 2023, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

She was married to Lt. Col. Donald Harlan, who predeceased her in 1990.

Born in Lowell, MA, she was the daughter of the late William and Katherine (Coughlin) McCarty.

She graduated from Notre Dame Academy with the class of 1954. After high school, Deborah went on to earn her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Lowell State College and master’s degree from Fitchburg State College.

She retired from SAU51 as an elementary school teacher in North Hampton, NH, and previously taught for the Department of Defense Dependent Schools in Germany and England, and school systems in Lowell and Wilmington, MA.

She was a communicant of Corpus Christi Parish in Portsmouth, NH, and Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal in Hampton, NH.

She enjoyed traveling but most importantly spending time with her family.

Deborah is survived by her son Donald Harlan of Greenland, NH; daughters Michelle Harlan of Alexandria, VA, and Heather Harlan of Roanoke, VA; as well as her goddaughter Deborah Oldfield of Leominster, MA, and her brothers William McCarty III of Lowell, MA; Paul McCarty of Destin, FL; Brian McCarty and his wife Kathy of Gardner, MA; and her sister, Marie and her husband John Mosher of St. Louis, MO; as well as many beloved nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Shaun McCarty.

FUNERAL NOTICE

Deborah Harlan, of Greenland, NH, died January 7, 2023. Visiting hours are Saturday, January 14, 2023, from 9:00-10:00AM at St. Margaret of Scotland Church, Lowell, MA. A funeral mass will follow at 10AM.  The burial will be in St. Patrick Cemetery, Lowell, MA. There will be a Celebration of Life at Mt. Pleasant Golf Club at noon; all are welcome. Please come and share your memories of Deborah with family and friends. Memorials may be made in her name to the American Cancer Society or St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
