Alan Lee Moyer, 73, of Chelmsford died Thursday January 12, 2017 at the Beth Israel Hospital in Boston after a long illness.
He was the husband of Pamela Montella-Moyer with whom he celebrated their 37th wedding anniversary on Aug. 4, 2016.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, he was the son of the late Harry and Alice Moyer. He was raised in Cleveland and graduated from Berea High School with the Class of 1962. He earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from Cleveland State University in 1967, his Master’s in Electrical Engineering from Syracuse University in 1972 and his PHD in Electrical Engineering from Syracuse University in 1974.
Alan worked as a software engineer at Mathworks of Natick before retiring in 2013. He previously worked at Kodak, Polaroid, as well as Wang Labs in Lowell and GE Lab of Binghamton, NY.
He was a member of the I.E.E.E., the House Rabbit Network and the Billerica Chess Club. He enjoyed rabbits and playing the piano and guitar. He was also an avid hiker and camper, amatuer photographer, and held two patents related to electronic imaging.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his son, Neil Moyer of Candia, NH; his daughter, Alissa Evangelista and her husband, David of N. Andover; a sister, Nancy Ratz and her husband Allan of OH; two granddaughters, Anna and Natalie Evangelista; two nieces and four nephews.
Visitation Monday from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. with a Memorial Service at 11:00 a.m. in the DOLAN FUNERAL HOME 106 Middlesex St. Chelmsford. Pam, there are no words. Al will be missed deeply. He was always there to help and provide for his family. I feel we were blessed to have him in our lives. I keep thinking of some of our last conversations and the smiles he generated. Surely he is still watching over us.

Uncle AL was always the sweetest guy. He embodied a family man. He loved you guys so much. I remember he would drink a Moosehead Beer or two when you all came to CT to visit us. Alan was about 11 years older than me and when I was a child I almost considered him more as a big brother than my uncle. I have a picture of him as a pre-teen sitting cross-legged in the front yard of the family home with infant me in his lap. I’ve been out in Arizona the past 35 years and didn’t get to visit the Moyer family as much as I would have liked to. I regret that. Uncle Al you will most certainly be missed by many.

This is sad news. Alan was instrumental in hiring me at Polaroid. I owe him much gratitude for that. During my tenure there I appreciated his kindness, his caring (including his love for rabbits), his love for music (particularly Mahler), and his professional support. I learned much from him personally and professionally.

I’m still in a bit of disbelief- Al was such a great guy. I know how much he loved his family and pets, especially his rabbits. His work will live on through the redesign he did on our web site. Alan’s generous and kind spirit will continue on with the many volunteers of the House Rabbit Network. He has left a legacy of the true spirit of volunteerism, and he will be remembered fondly. I am truly very sorry to hear of Alan’s passing, and I hope in time his wonderful memories will fill the emptiness. Please accept my sincere condolences.

Alan and I were next door neighbors in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1948… We became life long friends at the age of four… We played and vacationed and camped together for many years… He will be greatly missed !!!!
