Dorothy A. “Dottie” (Nystrom) Upton a native of Chelmsford passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her loving family on Tuesday, November 21, 2017.
She was married to her beloved husband, Donald Upton with whom she celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary on June 16, 2017.
She was born at home in West Chelmsford, the daughter of Arthur and Helena (Merrill) Nystrom on November 11, 1929. She attended Chelmsford schools and graduated as Valedictorian from Chelmsford High School with the Class of 1947.
Dottie was employed as a secretary at Traders and Mechanics Insurance Company for five years. She left there in 1952 to start a family, and stayed home until her youngest child started school. Dottie went to work for the Chelmsford Public Schools at the Westlands and Parker Schools as a teacher aide for one year and became school secretary for 23 years, retiring in 1992.
She was a family member of Mt. Pleasant Golf Club for over 60 years. In addition to playing golf she enjoyed dancing, needlepoint, playing cards, and spending time with family and friends.
Besides her husband, Donald, she is survived by her five children, Donna and her husband, Gerald Foley of Tyngsboro, MA, Deborah Burke of Chester, NH, Donald Upton of Nashua, NH, Dennis and his wife, Laura Upton of Nashua, NH and David and his wife, Carolyn Upton of Chelmsford, MA; a sister, Evelyn Welch of Westford, MA; eleven grandchildren, Jaret and Todd Foley, Sean, Bridget and Kerri Burke, Michael, Tabitha, Lindsey, Kara, Sophia and Danielle Upton, and seven great grandchildren, Ryan, Keegan, and Reagan Foley, Nora and Finn Burke, Brock and Jake Upton as well many nieces and nephews.
Dottie was the mother-in-law to the late John Burke, and the sister to the late Fred Nystrom and the late Charlotte Andruskiewicz.
The family would like to thank Circle Home Hospice for their care and support they provided Dottie.
Visiting hours Sun. 4 to 8 P.M. Funeral Mon. at 10am from the DOLAN FUNERAL HOME 106 MIDDLESEX ST. CHELMSFORD, with a funeral Mass at 11am at St. Mary Church. Burial in the Pine Ridge Cemetery, Chelmsford. Memorials may be made in her name to the Mt. Pleasant Golf Club Scholarship, 141 Staples St., Lowell, MA 01851. Mrs. Upton’s kindness and positivity are part of very happy memories in two segments of my life – at Westlands as a young teacher and at Parker as a parent. She even encouraged me to sign up to sub, which turned out to provide more happy memories! What a treasure she has been. May you all have peace.
