Mr. George Spencer Fletcher, 83, native son of Westford, MA, died peacefully on March 15, 2017 at Lowell General Hospital.
He was married to Mrs. Deborah (Levi) Fletcher, with whom he would have celebrated their 28th wedding anniversary in April.
George was the son of the late Walter and Grace (Taylor) Fletcher. George was a graduate of Westford Academy with the class of 1951 and the Stockbridge School of Agriculture at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst in 1953.
He was a fourth generation dairy farmer in Westford and was the founder and operator of Fletchers Stoney Brook Acres Farm Stand.
Besides farming, George had a long career of service to the Town of Westford. He worked for the Westford Fire Department for 43 years and was the Deputy Fire Chief for over 20 of those years. He served as the Animal Control Officer, Animal Inspector, and the Sealer of Weights and Measures. He was on the original Master Plan Committee in the 1960s and served on the Highway Garage Building Committee. George served as a Westford Selectman and was a Trustee of Westford Academy.
George was also passionate about protecting Westford’s environment, and served on the Westford Conservation Committee for five years. As his father before him, George served as the caretaker for East Boston Camps in Westford for 40 years and was proud to be instrumental in preserving East Boston Camps as conservation land.
George was 32nd degree Mason for over 50 years at the Caleb Butler Lodge in Ayer, MA.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Peter S. Fletcher and his partner Christopher Hartmann of Boston, MA and Robert Fletcher and his wife, Cheryl, of South Hampton, MA, three daughters, Sandra LaPrade and her partner, Randy Allmon of Grafton, MA, Janet and her husband, Michael Palermo of Nashua, NH and Lauren Fletcher of Hudson, NH, a stepson Levi Rothman and his wife Esther of Las Vegas, NV, a step daughter Sarah Rothman and her husband Nicholas Kershbaumer, of Manchester, NH, fourteen grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and many close family friends.
He was preceded by his siblings Roland Fletcher, Willard Fletcher, Walter Fletcher, and Charlotte (Fletcher) Stone. He is survived by his sister Barbara (Fletcher) Greenhalg of VA.
Visiting hours Tues. 3 to 7pm at the DOLAN FUNERAL HOME 106 MIDDLESEX ST. N. CHELMSFORD, MA. A Thanksgiving for the Life of George Fletcher will be held on Sunday, March 26 at 2 p.m. at All Saints’ Episcopal Church, 10 Billerica Road in Chelmsford, MA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Caleb Butler Masonic Lodge in Ayer, MA. Arrangements by Dolan Funeral Home 978-251-4041.

I met George when I became his daughter Lauren’s first grade teacher. I asked if I could help him milk cows. The answer was yes. Thirteen years of milking until the cows got sold. Before I came up to New England to be with Marilyn, she warned me to never ask her to choose between me and the cows. Thus became a Sunday ritual of breakfast with George, his family and whomever might show up to chew the fat. George was best man at our wedding and he built a dance floor and hosted the reception. Together, we pruned East Boston Camp of dead trees. Lately, we had dinner together when he was up for it and it was always a trip down memory lane and lots of laughs. I’ll miss you Buddy.

Mr Fletcher was one of the kindest men I’ve ever met. When I first moved to Westford he was so generous with his time helping me deal with whatever my problem was in his capacity serving the town. My young family loved going to his pumpkin field to pick out a pumpkin and have a tractor ride. These are not small acts, they are what bind you to a community. He will be missed, but so fondly remembered.

I met George through my delinquent dog who loved to go on runs. George was always kind and would find him and bring him home. As my children grew they too grew found of Mr Fletcher, he always had a smile and time to share his day with kids. He will be missed by us all. I will always remember his warm welcoming smile.

I will never forget how we would pick out a Christmas tree at the farm stand and it would be delivered to our door before we even made it home. My kids always thought it was part of the magic of Christmas but really it was George. George knew so much about so many things, we have all lost a great friend and a fine human being. Westford won’t be quite the same without his straight talk, his big smile and his hearty laugh. We will miss you George.
