James “Jim” Charles Campbell Sr., 81, of Lowell, died April 19, 2018, at Lowell General Hospital.
He was married to Anita L.(Morrissette) Campbell with whom he would have celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary on May 30th.
Born in Lowell on October 31, 1936 the son of the late Joseph A. Campbell and Margaret (McNamara) Campbell. He was a graduate of Dracut High School with the class of 1956, where he played football. He graduated from Lowell Tech with an Associate Degree in Criminology.
He retired from the Lowell Police Department in the year 2000 after 37 years.
He was a communicant of St. Rita’s Church.
Jim was proud to have been a member of the first Narcotic Squad established by the Lowell Police. Throughout his career he received many citations and awards for his service.
Jim worked at Dolan Funeral Home as an apprentice.
He was a member and former president of the Ancient Order of Hibernians. Jim hosted the “Sounds of Ireland” radio show on WLLH and WCAP.
He was a devoted Husband, Father, and Grandfather. Jim loved spending time with his family at his camp in Maine.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his sons, James “Chuck” Campbell and his wife, Kathleen of Lowell, Thomas Campbell and his wife, Lorrie of Nashua, NH; daughters, Anita and her husband, Gary Downs of Lowell, MA, Lynne and her husband, Richard Zaker of Hudson, NH, Pamela and her husband, Stephen Szablak of Lowell; brother, Robert and his wife, Linda Campbell of Andover; sisters, Mary Graham and her husband, Mike, Margaret Melanson, Patricia Boumil and her husband, John all of Dracut; brother in law, Michael Romanowski of Dracut; sisters in law, Joanne Campbell of Dracut, thirteen grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews; he is also survived by sisters and brothers in law of the Morrissette family including, David and his wife, Catherine, Arthur and his wife Catherine, Denis and his wife, Gail Morrissette, Donald LaDuke, and Dolores Martin and her husband, Wilfred.
He was the brother of the late Joseph, John, and Walter Campbell, and Katherina Romanowski.
Visiting hours Sunday 1 to 5 P.M. Funeral Mon. at 9am from the DOLAN FUNERAL HOME 106 MIDDLESEX ST. CHELMSFORD, with a funeral Mass at 10am at St. Rita’s Church, Lowell. Burial in Richardson Cemetery, Dracut. ARRANGEMENTS BY DOLAN FUNERAL HOME 978-251-4041.

I met Jimmy when I worked in the DA’s office at Lowell District Court in the late 70’s. He was always a gentleman, presented his cases so well, serious about his work but always with a great sense of humor. Some years later I was able to see the other sides of Jimmy & his so loved Anita through the events of St Patrick’s Irish Cultural Week. He was one of the truely nice people. I’m sure he’ll be directing activities in heaven! Thoughts and prayers to you, Anita, and your family.

So sorry for your loss. Jim was a gentleman, great cop, a true mentor and a devoted family man He, Angus and George Gentle organized our trip to Ireland in the early 90’s.

To Anita and the Campbell family; my deepest condolences on the passing of Jim. Can it be that long ago that I first met Jim when he drove the delivery truck for Wally McNamara’s market on Gorham street. He told me that he was going to be a police officer one day and sure enough he stopped to say hi when he was newly assigned to car #4. Little did I know I would follow him onto the job years later. He always had a good laugh when something struck him funny…Rest in peace. Will see you at roll call again one day.
