Joseph “Gary” Thomas Sr. 71 of Pepperell, formerly of North Chelmsford died peacefully in his sleep on October 25, 2018 at the Town and Country Nursing Home in Lowell after a long period of declining health.
Born in Lowell he was the son of Parker and Anna Marie (Dion) Thomas. He graduated from the Lowell Trade High School with the class of 1965. He was employed by Webber Cash and Carry Building Supply of North Chelmsford for many years. Then he began a career as a baker at Hannaford stores and retired from Dunkin Donuts as a third shift baker.
Gary was a talented carpenter and always had a project going, cabinets, desks, chests and he once built a futon for a friend. He loved camping in his conversion van, traveling through many states. He always had a tent handy to use or lend out. He had a passion for collecting antique model cars and trucks and could never pass by a flea market. Gary loved people and made friends everywhere he went. He was a frequent visitor of the Pepperell Senior Center for many years. He was always generous with his time and talent.
Gary is survived by his sons Joseph G. Thomas Jr. of Rochester, NH and Shawn Thomas and his wife Camilla of Biddeford, ME, his sister Gail Clermont of North Chelmsford: three grandchildren, Jessika, Sera and Samara, many nieces, cousins and friends. He also leaves a very special friend, Barbara Schmidt of New Jersey who always supported him with phone calls, letters, visits and “care” packages. The family sincerely thanks the Staff of the Town and Country Nursing Home for their loving care and attention to “Joe”, he loved you.
Per his wishes there are no visiting hours. His Funeral Mass will be Monday 11:00 am at St. John the Evangelist Church, 115 Middlesex St. North Chelmsford. Memorials may be made in his name to St. John the Evangelist Church in North Chelmsford
