Lee T. Schermerhorn, 67, of Tyngsborough, MA passed away Saturday April 22, 2017 after a long struggle with an autoimmune disease.
He was married to Barbara W. (Waite) Schermerhorn of Tyngsborough for 43 years. They would have celebrated their 44th wedding anniversary on June 2.
Born in Corinth, New York on March 5, 1950, he was a son of Elaine (Goodnoe) Ryder of Corinth, NY, the late Alan Schermerhorn and stepson of Charles Ryder. Lee was raised in Corinth, NY and graduated from Corinth High School Class of 1968. He earned his BS in Nuclear Engineering and his Master’s in Computer Science from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY.
Lee worked as a Computer Design Software Engineer with Hewlett Packard of Fort Collins, CO until October 2016. He had a distinguished career in the computer science industry with several publications, awards and recognitions. Lee worked on Unix, Tru64 and Linux operating systems. He traveled worldwide for POSIX and IEEE, participating in working groups to maintain compatibility between operating systems.
He loved his family and spending time with them, including traveling to NY to be with his mother and siblings. In his spare time he enjoyed reading, hiking and loved the company of his cats. He was a self-taught musician with a lifelong passion for music. He enjoyed playing guitar in the Praise Team band of the Evangelical Congregational Church, Dunstable, MA and the Old Enuff to Know Better band of Dunstable, MA, and mentored students learning to play the guitar.
In addition to his wife, mother and stepfather, Lee is survived by three daughters, Julie Vittengl and her husband, Jason of So. Glens Falls, NY, Melissa Wiley and her husband Chance of Alexandria, VA, Dr. Kelly Schermerhorn and her fiancé, Brandon Zatopek of Billerica, MA; two brothers and their wives, Lane and Brenda Schermerhorn of Corinth, NY, and Dean Schermerhorn and Cyndi Muratore of Thurman, NY; two sisters, Dana Cross and Amy Schermerhorn of Ausable Forks, NY; two granddaughters, Sarah and Sophie Vittengl, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his stepbrother and wife Roger and Wendy Ryder of Camp Hill, PA, and stepsister and her husband Marcia and Joe O’Donnell of Wassaic, NY.

I had the privilege of working for Lee when he managed the OS group at Masscomp/Concurrent. Lee was a great manager and I enjoyed working for him there. I was glad to catch up with him on occasion when we were both working for HP. Great guy! I will miss him.

Lee’s enjoyment of wine was only outmatched by his keen wit and intellect. Lee always had insightful, kind and quite humorous remarks on virtually any subject. He made our wine tastings a joy, plain and simple. Lee and Barb had us over for a BBQ one memorable Sunday. Although Lee and Barb forgave me for walking through their screen door, Lee never let the opportunity go by to remind me we are all human and that it is important to laugh at ourselves. Lee was a shining example of humanity. Thanks to Barb for sharing him with Gayle and I. We honor you both and thank you for giving us kind memories.

To Barb, the girls and the entire family, I am so very sorry for your loss. For me, Lee was and always will be that one person you look back and say they made a huge impact on your life. When Lee hired me back in ’83 I knew I liked computers but after working with him for those early years, he gave me understanding at a level I never would have gained on my own. From Boss, to Mentor to Friend in the first week we met, to standing with me at my wedding, I will always be thankful that our paths crossed. You will be missed.

Lee was a very great man. He was my mentor in the 70s and 80s. Very calm in tough situations. Extremely insightful and forward thinking. Much of what I am today came from working with him. My condolences to his family and friends. He will be missed.

Very sad to hear this news! My heart goes out to Lee’s family. I can’t imagine how great of a loss this must be. I had the privilege to get to know Lee and work with him for the past 7 years. Even though we were located some 4000 miles apart, I consider him a friend. He was a kind man and great mentor and always willing to help others and share his great knowledge. I really do not know what to say here, we just texted each other three weeks ago, and Lee even asked my email to contact easier. Lee was a great man, mentor, friend. We have a weekly call meeting back to HPE days for a year, he taught me a lot, work, life, everything. Still fresh about the first meet with him last year, enjoyed the beer with him and Andrew. Lee, my friend, I will miss you forever.

Like many of the people who had the privilege to work with Lee I considered him a mentor and a friend. He loved his work and never lost his passion for tackling hard problems and coming up with creative solutions. He also loved good wine and good food (most memorable was a breakfast of Mother’s famous “Biscuits and debris” he took me to while we were at a conference in New Orleans; I’m still salivating just thinking of it, the man knew where to find good food!). Most of all though he loved his family and you could always see the pride in his eyes when he talked about his girls. I’ll miss you Lee.

I worked for Lee during the challenging times of Masscomp/Concurrent. He always found the good and the positive in each challenge and situation. He always had a vision as to how to get to the next solution and his good nature was a big help for the teams. I am better for having worked with him, and will always remember him as a great co-worker.
