Mary M. (DePaulis) Shaughnessy aged 81 years, passed peacefully with her family by her side on Sunday, February 18, 2018. She was the youngest daughter of John & Ellen DePaulis. She was one of seven children. She grew up in Lowell before moving to Chelmsford twenty-eight years ago.

Mary was the beloved wife of William (Bill) Shaughnessy) for 61 years. They would have celebrated their 62nd anniversary in  June.  Bill still referred to Mary as his bride after all these years.

Mary loved to spend time with her family. She cherished the Christmas Eve’s that the entire family (and then some) would gather at their home to celebrate together. In past years, before her illness, Mary & Bill would enjoy much time together in Maine. She loved Kennebunkport and Wells beaches. Mary was a collector of teddy bears. She also loved to hand sew teddy bears. She was proud of the fact that she hand made a teddy bear for each of her grandchildren and great grandchildren out of Bill’s flannel shirts that he no longer wore. She was also a fan of the Boston Red Sox, watching as many games on television as she could with Bill.

Mary is survived by her loving husband Bill. Their son, James (Jim) and his wife Nancy Shaughnessy, and by her daughter Patricia (Patti) Shaughnessy and her fiancé Philip Knowlton.

She is also survived by six grandchildren that she took great joy in spending time with; Daryl and his wife Lisa, David, Thomas and his wife Kasey, Erin, Jonathan, and Amy.

Mary also had six great grandchildren that she adored; Brandon, Christopher, Kylie, Kevin, Alex & Declan.

She is survived by two sisters; Eileen Champagne and Virginia Makarewicz. She also leaves many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Mary was the sister of the late Margaret (Peggy) Coldwell, Columba (Mickey) Murphy, Rita Taylor and John DePaulis.

In following her wishes, there will be no services. Memorials in Mary’s name can be made to the charity of one’s choice.

The family would like to thank the staff at Lowell General Hospital Emergency Department; especially Dr. Nitka who went out of their way to make Mary’s passing as peaceful as possible.

Mary, even though you were my aunt, you were more like a sister to me since you were just a few years older than I. We played together as kids and you always let me read your latest movie magazines. Most of the clothes I wore back then were originally yours and I thank you for that. I loved you dearly and was so honored when you asked me to be your bridesmaid when you and Bill married. I’m also grateful that we got to spend time together these past few years and it was like old times once again. I’m really gonna miss you Mary. Also want to thank my wonderful Uncle Bill for all the love, care and devotion that he has shown you throughout all your many years together. Rest well dear Mary… Until we meet again.

Many many memories come flooding back, so many of the kitchen on Arthur Street. My sister Susan and I spent so much time in that kitchen. A place that was warm and cozy and where we were always welcome! As teenagers we sure didn’t make that easy for Mary, but some how she managed to forgive us our teenage foolishness and throughout the years always welcomed us back. The years went by so quickly and in Chelmsford she welcomed us into her new kitchen. I remember one day in particular sitting and talking over tea and cake for hours. An adult then, I remember thinking that with some people, no matter how far away or how much time may pass, the importance of what they gave to our foundation will be part of us forever. We sat together one last time at a table, myself, Susan and Patti, at Tom’s wedding and we told Mary how much those early days on Arthur Street had meant to us, the little acts of kindness that follow you through a lifetime. How each life impacts another. We may not have been related by blood, but the Shaughnessys will always feel like family to me. Love you guys, forever.

We are so sorry to hear about Mary.
I will always remember the loving caring relationship that Bill and Mary had. You always made me feel welcome in your home (and I spent a lot of time there) and I will always be grateful for that. Memories from Arthur St were a long time ago but they stay in my heart.
I know your hearts are heavy but God has already welcomed Mary into his kingdom to watch over the rest of her family.
Keep all the wonderful memories close to your hearts.

    Love,
    Mary Anne & Steve
