OMG I just found out! I am heartbroken. He was the first friend I made at college and we remained friends throughout the rest of our lives. He turned me onto Kerouac and black olives. I am so sorry for your loss. I considered him to be my brother. He was loved by many people outside of his family. He will be sorely missed.

My tribute to Nick posted on FB: My great friend, Nick Koumantzelis, passed away a few weeks ago. I just found out. I feel like crying but can’t get there, yet. He is one of a few choice gentlemen I think of as my brother.

He was the first friend I truly connected with at college. We were NOT good roommates (lol). He is the only guy I will say was better than me at ping pong. And for me, that is one heck of an admission. Epic battles!!

He walked onto the soccer field a couple of weeks into the season wearing knee pads (chuckles). And even though his skills were not up to par, he had a knack for putting the ball in the goal unlike anyone else with whom I ever played. He was NOT the best player. But he WAS the best scorer.

His life after college was marred by a terrible car wreck shortly after we graduated. He had more hip replacement surgeries than I can recall. He faced amputation of many toes as his circulation failed after so may surgeries!

He knew Jack Kerouac. He showed me the family photographic proof and told me many stories. As a matter of fact, I never heard of Kerouac until I met this guy. Nick had written a novel (unpublished of course) by our freshman year of college!

I loved this guy and shall miss him tremendously. Please say a prayer for the soul of my friend and brother, Nicholas George Koumantzelis. May he rest in peace. He had a very difficult life and he handled it with grace and compassion which I shall always admire.

Man. This news hit me in the gut. He was so kind and funny. I had many a long talks with him. He and I both majored in Journalism, so we were in several classes together at FSC and usually ate lunch together. He visited my house about 25 years ago and we talked about the day we would die. Here it is fir him. I’m so sorry for the loss of Nick and special thoughts and prayers for the family, TEPS and all of those who felt close to him. May God grant Mercy
