Susanne (McInerney) Szekely passed away peacefully with her daughter-in-law at her side in the early hours of Tuesday morning at Mass General Hospital.  Susanne had a long life filled with love and family.  She was born and raised in Lowell, MA the daughter of Francis and Anne (Rourke) McInerney, with her brother Francis Jr and sister Leslie Carroll-Hodgden.  Susanne attended both St. Patrick’s and Keith Hall high schools in Lowell and graduated from Boston College. She then began her career as an elementary school teacher.  She met her husband William in Lowell and married him in 1966.

Susanne and Bill soon set up their home in Chelmsford which would become a haven of comfort, support and hospitality for friends and family for the rest of her life. From pool parties, Christmas parties, Fourth of July celebrations, to birthdays her home was a center of family and love. Her family grew when their son Sean was born. Being a mother to Sean became her true calling and that vocation extended to other important people throughout her life. Susanne’s giving spirit abounded past her hosting renown, as she offered her home to many family and friends over the years. For a day, a night, a week, or sometimes years, her door was always open to a loved one in need of care, solace or sometimes just some fun.

The marriage of her son to Laura and the birth of her grandchildren Regan and Patrick, extended her family and gave her a new focus for all her love and attention.  Susanne enjoyed travelling with her husband, family, and friends.  She visited many locations in the United States and Europe and particularly enjoyed time in Ireland, the home of her dearly beloved grandmother, and reconnecting with the Irish branch of her family.  Despite health issues, in recent years she lived her life on her terms.  She did not let mobility issues or lack of stamina keep her from doing the things she enjoyed.

Susanne will be missed by her extended family of nieces, nephews and cousins and a wide circle of friends.
