Sylvia (Vetrano) Smaldone, 90, of Chelmsford died unexpectedly at Lowell General Hospital Friday October 6, 2017.
She was the wife of John C. Smaldone with whom she celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary on April 16th.
Born in Boston, MA, she was the daughter of the late Salvadore and Theresa Vetrano. She was raised in Boston and graduated from East Boston High School with the class of 1945.
In her early years, Sylvia worked for Wang Labs in Lowell. Later she worked as a Teacher’s Aide at the McCarthy Middle School in Chelmsford. She enjoyed cooking and spending time with her family.
She was a communicant of St. Kathryn’s Church in Hudson, NH and St. Mary’s Church in Chelmsford.
Besides her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Gail Smaldone of Chelmsford; two sons and their wives, Robert and Jean Smaldone of Pepperell and John and Debra Smaldone of Chelmsford; a sister, Dolores Ventresca and her husband, Domenic of Medford, MA; sister in-law, Marie Vetrano of Somerville; two grandchildren, Melissa Dulac and Alicia Lawless and her husband Eric; three great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her brother, Anthony Vetrano and her sister, Jennie Tasso.
Visiting hours are Tuesday from 3 to 7:00 p.m. at the DOLAN FUNERAL HOME, 106 MIDDLESEX ST., CHELMSFORD. Funeral Wed 9:00 a.m. from the Funeral Home with a Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. at St. Kathryn’s Church 6 Dracut Road Hudson, NH. Burial in the Pine Ridge Cemetery, Chelmsford. Thank you, Cindy, Scott and Lauren. My mother loved all of you so very much. We had a great 10 years of being across the street from each other. I don’t think you’ll ever come across another italian neighbor with all kinds of “carbohydrates,” on tap for tea time, etc, as you have in my mother.

Bunny I am so sorry that you lost your soulmate. I know how much she meant to you after 67 Years of marriage you become one and to lose that half of you is extremely difficult to accept. Smaldone family, I am heartbroken for your loss. Sylvia is in every childhood memory I have! The pool, the sauce, the advice and extra mothering, because that’s how she was. Sylvia was truly an amazing woman who loved and cared for her family and others. She will be missed.
